Language addiction makes learning easy

Learning a language every day

Learning a language can be like learning to play an instrument

I read a great article about how language learning can be an addiction – as can learning the guitar, crossword puzzles, juggling and numerous other pursuits. It was written by a Professor who is a narcotics  expert – and so comes with some authority. This Professor is learning the guitar despite not having any real musical talent. However a day without guitar playing is incomplete for him, he says.

It so happens I am learning Italian and also the guitar and have spent about three years learning both – and can corroborate what he says. It feels like a mild addiction. Every night, I have to read a bit of Italian on my Kindle. Every morning I have to play my guitar after breakfast (sorry kids!).

Becoming a language addict makes learning easy and automatic…you persist everyday and it becomes part of who you are and what you do. Language acquisition just happens.

So a sure fire way of learning a language is to become an addict! How to do that? For me it meant picking up my guitar everyday or reading everyday for 3 months – even when I didn’t feel like it….then like a person who needs to keep fit everyday – it becomes a fix. It’s a habit (a good one) that happens all by itself. Sometimes I have to force myself to put my guitar down – at other times I need to switch out the light and stop reading.

Our Professor says that learning a language: “can harness the brain’s joy of learning new things, but leave you with something of permanent value, in a way that neither drugs nor video games ever could. It leaves you with a sense of fulfilment, which goes back to what pioneering psychologist Abraham Maslow called “self-actualization.”

Oh yeh! Got to have me some of that!
