Don’t learn a foreign language – Discover It!

Here’s an odd thing.

Discover a language

Discovery is the most powerful way to learn.

When we were small our parents did not give us lists of foreign words for us to learn for tomorrow morning . That would have been be ridiculous, right? What actually happened was that we pointed at things we wanted to know the word for (such as a ball), our parents told us what is was and we repeated it. It seemed easy and natural and we all went on to be fluent in our first language. This process is called Discovery Learning and it is the way our brains are wired to learn!

DISCOVERY LEARNING is the best way to learn a foreign language – bar none. It is all the more shocking therefore that hardly any products use this method. They focus on feeding you what they think you should learn rather than what your brain is ready to receive. Discovery Learning is the opposite. It involves discovering what you want to know, when you want to know it. Some scientists call this the “Aha! Moment” or “Eureka Moment”. It’s when you “get it”. Compare this method with the mind numbing boredom of learning from lists…a process that Dr H Douglas Brown, language Professor at San Francisco State University says leads to Systematic Forgetting in his book “Principles of Language Learning and Teaching”.

Learn to speak French with KLOO

Creating learning through Discovery Learning, while more powerful, is actually difficult to create. However KLOO‘s whole approach is based on this theory. It creates hundreds of Aha! moments as you seek the meanings of words to create sentences and score points. I am genuinely not aware of another language system that achieves this. So if you want to learn a new language the way you learned your first language, watch this video!
